Black-Type Analysis: Gstaad the Headline Act on Blockbuster Saturday

Gstaad | Eclipse Sportswire

Saturday, Curragh, post time: 15:40, TATTERSALLS IRISH 2,000 GUINEAS-G1, €290,000, 3yo, c/f, 8fT

Field: Alparslan (Ire) (Dandy Man {Ire}), Bamako Beach (Ire) (Sands Of Mali {Fr}), Distant Storm (GB) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}), Go Just Do It (GB) (Kingman {GB}), Gstaad (GB) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}), Neolithic (Ire) (Sioux Nation), Pacific Avenue (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), Power Blue (Ire) (Space Blues {Ire}), Take Charge Star (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}), Thesecretadversary (Ire) (St Mark's Basilica {Fr}).

TDN Analysis: Take out Bow Echo and we'd be talking about one of the most impressive 2,000 Guineas winners in history in Gstaad, so far was he clear of the remainder in a time that eclipsed that of most recent winners of the Newmarket Classic. This is his for the taking if in the same form and the vibes from Ballydoyle suggest he has even improved for the experience as is the case of most of the yard's horses. Distant Storm was soundly beaten there and has eight lengths to make up, which seems insurmountable unless something goes amiss with the favourite. There is a case to be made for greater improvement from Thesecretadversary, who pulled too hard when fifth three weeks ago and has the one draw to get cover early. Alparslan likes to try and dominate and with the pace-setting Neolithic and Pacific Avenue in here the pace is sure to be frantic. [Tom Frary].

Saturday, Haydock, post time: 15:30, THE WILLIAM HILL TEMPLE STAKES-G2, £165,000, 3yo/up, 5fT

Field: Khaadem (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}), Asfoora (Aus) (Flying Artie {Aus}), American Affair (GB) (Washington DC {Ire}), Getreadytorumble (GB) (Rumble Inthejungle {Ire}), Jakajaro (Ire) (Too Darn Hot {GB}), Jm Jungle (Ire) (Bungle Inthejungle {GB}), Night Raider (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}), Shagraan (Ire) (Sioux Nation), Beautiful Diamond (GB) (Twilight Son {GB}), First Instinct (GB) (Bated Breath {GB}), Frost At Dawn (Frosted), Mgheera (GB) (Zoustar {Aus}), Argentine Tango (GB) (Mattmu {GB}).

TDN Analysis: Given how well Clive Cox's sprinters have started the campaign, the yard's re-acquired Shagraan has to be respected having chased home the Palace House winner Night Raider on his seasonal bow. That rival has to do show he can dominate again on a much slower surface and he is an open book with his running style, but his gelding op seems to have worked the oracle. Asfoora was well-beaten in that Newmarket contest, but as she showed when fourth in this two years ago always needs that Euro introduction and will handle the ground having mastered ParisLongchamp's testing going on Arc day. [Tom Frary].

Saturday, Haydock, post time: 14:58, THE WILLIAM HILL SANDY LANE STAKES-G2, £165,000, 3yo, 6fT

Field: Aqpan (Ire) (Blue Point {Ire}), Brussels (GB) (Wootton Bassett {GB}), Coppull (GB) (Bated Breath {GB}), Division (GB) (Kingman {GB}), Five Ways (GB) (Kameko), Rock On Thunder (Ire) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}), Spicy Marg (GB) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}), Venetian Sun (Ire) (Starman {GB}).

TDN Analysis: Following the eclipse of Ballydoyle's big two for the Commonwealth Cup in recent days, the picture for that Royal Ascot sprint has become cloudier. Division is one who has already put his hand up for that with his big performance in the Pavilion last month, where he did everything wrong bar his eye-catching finishing effort behind Coppull and with a clean break here is probably the key player. That is a potentially foolish statement given that last year's Prix Morny heroine Venetian Sun is in attendance, but while she reverts to the trip over which she shone in 2025 there are questions to answer after a tame display in the 1,000 Guineas. [Tom Frary].

Saturday, Curragh, post time: 15:05, WEATHERBYS IRELAND GREENLANDS STAKES-G2, €78,000, 4yo/up, 6fT

Field: Powerful Glory (Ire) (Cotai Glory {GB}), Big Gossey (Ire) (Gutaifan {Ire}), Bucanero Fuerte (GB) (Wootton Bassett {GB}), Chicago Critic (GB) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}), Comanche Brave (Ire) (Wootton Bassett {GB}), James's Delight (Ire) (Invincible Army {Ire}), Marvelman (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), Montassib (GB) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}), Spycatcher (Ire) (Vadamos {Fr}), Valiant Force (Malibu Moon), Fregada (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}).

TDN Analysis: There was more than one head-scratching moment on Champions Day, but the 200-1 win of Powerful Glory in the British Champions Sprint Stakes was not as far-fetched beforehand as his odds suggested. Coming back with a penalty makes him vulnerable, especially with the likes of track specialists Big Gossey and Bucanero Fuerte lining up and there is also a real lurker to contend with here in Comanche Brave. He was having only his third career start at six furlongs last time when fifth in the Chairman's Sprint Prize and managed to get within six lengths of Ka Ying Rising, which is some feat. [Tom Frary].

Saturday, York, post time: 15:15, THE WILLIAM HILL BRONTE CUP FILLIES' STAKES-G3, £100,000, 4yo/up, f/m, 13f 188yT

Field: Danielle (GB) (Cracksman {GB}), Desert Spring (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}), Lava Stream (Ire) (Too Darn Hot {GB}), Miss Alpilles (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), Miss Wong (GB) (Study of Man {Ire}), Rock N Roll Pinkie (GB) (Sun Central {Ire}), Tamam Desert (Ire) (Sea The Moon {Ger}).

TDN Analysis: Danielle will be a warm order, despite not having the slow ground on which she thrives as she showed when the nine-length winner of Doncaster's Listed Gillies Fillies' Stakes in November. She has a clear form advantage over Miss Alpilles, but that Listed Rose Bowl Stakes winner had some smart stayers behind when third in the Sagaro and could still be improving, while the 2024 Ribblesdale Stakes runner-up Lava Stream is an unknown quantity making her way back from injury. [Tom Frary].

Saturday, Curragh, post time: 16:15, HEIDER FAMILY STABLES GALLINULE STAKES-G3, €42,000, 3yo, 10fT

Field: Amadeus Mozart (Ire) (Wootton Bassett {GB}), Causeway (Ire) (Wootton Bassett {GB}), Mr Vettori (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}), Shaihaan (Ire) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}), Shosholoza (Ire) (Australia {GB}), South Island (Ire) (Wootton Bassett {GB}), Zia Zabel (Ire) (Ghaiyyath {Ire}), Alphecca (Ire) (Sioux Nation), Drop Dead Gorgeous (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}).

TDN Analysis: A fascinating renewal of this late Derby trial which is really more of a pointer to the King Edward VII and Irish Derby. Ryan Moore has sided with the colt Causeway over the similarly-unexposed filly Drop Dead Gorgeous and he diverges from the “Paddington” route going up in trip after his Madrid and Tetrarch wins. Drop Dead Gorgeous shaped as if this trip would suit while third in the Athasi, which is no surprise given her pedigree and she has a profile much like her Prix de Diane-winning half-sister Joan Of Arc at present. Like most of the Classic trials staged in Ireland this year, this is dominated by O'Brien Sr and the O'Brien Jrs and Ballydoyle have a smart third-string in Amadeus Mozart, while Donnacha's Shaihaan provides a pre-Epsom insight into the worth of the Leopardstown Derby Trial in which he was fourth. [Tom Frary].

Saturday, Goodwood, post time: 14:00, THE BRITISH STALLION STUDS EBF COCKED HAT STAKES-Listed, £70,000, 3yo, c/g, 11f 44yT

Field: Command The Stars (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), Saxon Street (Ire) (Saxon Warrior {Jpn}), Del Maro (Ger) (Camelot {GB}), Golden Story (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}), Oratorical (GB) (Lope Y Fernandez {Ire}).

TDN Analysis: The old “Predominate” sees Saxon Street bid to add to his Blue Riband Trial success last month as he tackles the Dee Stakes third Golden Story. That colt provides a marker to the most exciting three-year-old in training outside of Bow Echo, with Constitution River disappearing out of sight with every stride on the Roodee. Interestingly, Del Maro was beaten nearly as far by Ballydoyle's other leading Derby hope Benvenuto Cellini in the Chester Vase so this should provide a clue or two. [Tom Frary].

Saturday, Goodwood, post time: 15:10, THE FITZDARES HEIGHT OF FASHION STAKES-Listed, £70,000, 3yo, f, 9f 197yT

Field: Just Call Me Angel (GB) (Dark Angel {Ire}), Brilliant Star (GB) (Cracksman {GB}), Classic Cuvee (GB) (Siyouni {Fr}), Della Pace (GB) (Camelot {GB}), Earth Shot (Ire) (Time Test {GB}), Inis Mor (Fr) (Galiway {GB}), On Message (GB) (Camelot {GB}), Winged One (Ire) (Australia {GB}).

TDN Analysis: Earth Shot and Brilliant Star are the most intriguing members of the cast for this strong line-up for the old “Lupe” that always had the potential to throw up an Oaks heroine. Both have been impressive in weak contests and they will need to show they can hold their own against the established yardsticks Inis Mor and Just Call Me Angel, both of whom move up in trip with the latter having captured the Premio Regina Elena or Italian 1,000 Guineas. [Tom Frary].

Saturday, Bordeaux-Le Bouscat, France, post time: 12:31, 170TH DERBY DU MIDI-Listed, €50,300, 3yo, 9 1/2fT

Field: Plutarque (Fr) (Victor Ludorum {GB}), Artilleur (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}), Regal Resolve (GB) (Kingman {GB}), Texas Wood (Fr) (Wooded {Ire}), Mature (Fr) (Zarak {Fr}), Pink Panthera (Fr) (Chachnak {Fr}), Yaggera (Fr) (Iffraaj {GB}).

TDN Analysis: Juddmonte's 2025 Listed Prix Isonomy victor Regal Resolve will be a warm order coming back off a runner-up finish in this month's G3 Prix Greffulhe at Saint-Cloud and encounters Listed Prix de la Seine third Pink Panthera, who is the only other entry boasting black type. Mature defeated Plutarque, Artilleur and Texas Wood in a course-and-distance conditions heat last month and all four, along with Yaggera, make their stakes debuts here. [Sean Cronin].

Sunday, Curragh, post time: 15:55, TATTERSALLS GOLD CUP-G1, €300,000, 4yo/up, 10 1/2fT

Field: Almaqam (GB) (Lope De Vega {Ire}), Bay City Roller (Ire) (New Bay {GB}), Edward Hamilton (Ire) (Frankel {GB}), Green Impact (Ire) (Wootton Bassett {GB}), Royal Rhyme (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}), Saddadd (Ire) (Pinatubo {Ire}), Tiberius Thunder (Ire) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}), Minnie Hauk (Ire) (Frankel {GB}).

TDN Analysis: There should be no stopping Minnie Hauk after her smooth re-entry in the Mooresbridge, given what we now know about her achievement in making Daryz pull out all the stops in the Arc. There isn't anything in this line-up that could hold a candle to the monster from the Aga Khan Studs and, likeable as the English challengers Almaqam, Bay City Roller and Saddadd are, we have seen time and time again how large the gap is from Group 2 and Group 3 company to the level at which the Ballydoyle filly operates. With her pacemaker Edward Hamilton able to take her a long way, this should prove an ideal warm-up for the real test of her character and ability at Royal Ascot next month. [Tom Frary].

Sunday, Curragh, post time: 16:30, TATTERSALLS IRISH 1,000 GUINEAS-G1, €290,000, 3yo, f, 8fT

Field: Abashiri (GB) (Frankel {GB}), America Queen (Ire) (Havana Grey {GB}), Beautify (Ire) (Wootton Bassett {GB}), Black Caviar Gold (Ire) (Havana Grey {GB}), Hope Queen (Ire) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}), Kensington Lane (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}), Magny Cours (Ire) (Awtaad {Ire}), Pivotal Attack (GB) (Pinatubo {Ire}), Precise (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}), Sinmara (GB) (Kingman {GB}), Sukanya (GB) (Havana Grey {GB}), True Love (Ire) (No Nay Never).

TDN Analysis: With Ryan Moore getting off Precise and on to True Love, the suggestion is that the brains at Rosegreen have shifted their thinking as to the pecking order. It wasn't that long ago that Aidan O'Brien was describing last year's Fillies' Mile and Moyglare Stud Stakes winner Precise as an “incredible filly” and now she can't even get the first-choice jockey, which owes much to the manner of True Love's victory at Newmarket. This is another stamina test, possibly different to the last, but the way the imposing 1,000 Guineas winner is going about her job at the moment suggests she can go on improving. It's always hard to look past the best of Ballydoyle on this weekend and especially so here, with some dubious stayers in America Queen and Sukanya in opposition and Abashiri looking like one who will need further to show her best. Kensington Lane has a squeak on her Athasi win, as she is unexposed at a mile and has a progressive profile. [Tom Frary].

Sunday, ParisLongchamp, France, post time: 15:50, PRIX CORRIDA-G2, €119,000, 4yo/up, f/m, 10 1/2fT

Field: Light The Ghost (Ger) (Waldgeist {GB}), Santagada (GB) (Soldier Hollow {GB}), Sunly (GB) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}), Euboa (Fr) (Soldier Hollow {GB}), Modern Light (Fr) (City Light {Fr}), We'll Defend (Fr) (Zelzal {Fr}), Aventure (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}).

TDN Analysis: Last term's G1 Prix Vermeille heroine Aventure has competed at the highest level in half of her 14 career starts and will head postward returning off a third to Daryz in last month's G1 Prix Ganay. Juddmonte's dual Group 3 winner Sunly, who boasts a four-from-five record, poses a threat, as does five-time Group 3 winner and G1 Preis der Diana (German Oaks) sixth Santagada. Lightly-raced TDN Rising Star We'll Defend makes her fourth start here and comes back off a defeat of Indalimos and Tajlina in the Listed Prix Zarkava in early April and is also worthy of consideration. [Sean Cronin].

Sunday, Curragh, post time: 15:20, LANWADES STUD STAKES-G2, €78,000, 4yo/up, 8fT

Field: California Dreamer (GB) (Mehmas {Ire}), Carolina Jetstream (GB) (Pinatubo {Ire}), Celestial Orbit (GB) (No Nay Never), City Of Memphis (Ire) (Sioux Nation), Francophone (GB) (Study Of Man {Ire}), Hey Boo (GB) (Iffraaj {GB}), Jancis (Ire) (Tamayuz {GB}), One Look (Ire) (Gleneagles {Ire}), Princess Child (Fr) (Dariyan {Fr}), Quebec (Ger) (Sea The Moon {Ger}), Sindria (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}), Stateira (Fr) (Persian King {Ire}).

TDN Analysis: Gifted the perfect pace and ground scenario in the Dahlia, Jancis duly delivered but it all has to fall right again and there is no guarantee of that. City Of Memphis is even less-exposed and was admirably straightforward as well as classy when stamping her authority on the Mutamakina at Leopardstown last time. She may have the edge over stablemate One Look, back in the race in which she chased home Porta Fortuna 12 months ago en route to finishing third in the Prix de l'Opera. [Tom Frary].

Sunday, Curragh, post time: 14:15, KILKEA CASTLE MARBLE HILL STAKES-G3, €42,000, 2yo, 6fT

Field: Alaskan Bear (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}), Carry The Flag (Ire) (No Nay Never), Edward Thatch (Ire) (Blackbeard {Ire}), Great Barrier Reef (Ire) (No Nay Never), Immortal Guard (Ire) (Persian Force {Ire}), Lars Soldier (Ire) (Soldier's Call {GB}), Otherworldly (Ire) (Persian King {Ire}), Brazilian Diva (Ire) (Earthlight {Ire}).

TDN Analysis: Ballydoyle's course-and-distance-winning TDN Rising Star Great Barrier Reef is the central focus here and everything points to him providing Aidan O'Brien with a 14th renewal. Given that the last four were Albert Einstein, Blackbeard, Fairyland and Caravaggio, if he follows the script it's very likely we will see him make his mark at the highest level before too long. He is joined by the stable's Naas scorer Carry The Flag but it is clear that he is the main man here. Amo took this with Arizona Blaze two years ago and provide potentially the main threat in Blackbeard's impressive Cork maiden winner Edward Thatch, who is part-owned by Giselle De Aguiar and who would be providing a positive ending to a rollercoaster week. Robson De Aguiar also saddles the course-and-distance maiden winner Immortal Guard, another son of a first-crop sire in Persian Force who is not owned by Amo for extra spice. [Tom Frary].

Sunday, ParisLongchamp, France, post time: 14:33, PRIX HOCQUART-G3, €73,200, 3yo, 11fT

Field: Varandir (Fr) (Zarak {Fr}), Baroud (GB) (Frankel {GB}), Chamali (GB) (Time Test {GB}), Jabracadabra (Fr) (Cracksman {GB}), Zaramix (Fr) (Zarak {Fr}), Wiki (GB) (Make Believe {GB}).

TDN Analysis: Francis Graffard trainee Varandir is undefeated in two starts and comes back off wins at this venue and Lyon Parilly in April. Chamali has a similar two-for-two record having saluted at Chantilly in December and here on sophomore return last month. The twice-raced Wiki is the only contender with black type in the books, having hit the board in last month's Listed Prix de Suresnes, and the gelded Jabracadabra has bagged his last three starts. Andre Fabre has won this seven times and is represented by Saint-Cloud maiden winner Baroud, while Stall Perlen's Zaramix was 5 1/2 lengths adrift of Wiki last time. [Sean Cronin].

Sunday, Hoppegarten, Germany, post time: 16:10, DIANA-TRIAL-G3, €55,200, 3yo, f, 10fT

Field: Alsterperle (Ger) (Reliable Man {GB}), Antigua (Ger) (Sea The Moon {Ger}), Believe In Me (Ger) (Intello {Ger}), Ginger Cat (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), Gua Lipa (Fr) (Cloth Of Stars {Ire}), Salonglaenzende (Ire) (Gleneagles {Ire}), Santa Catarina (Ger) (Zarak {Fr}), Soreanga (Ger) (Siyouni {Fr}).

TDN Analysis: All eight retain tickets to August's main event at Dusseldorf, with this month's G3 Schwarzgold-Rennen victrix Santa Catarina and last term's Listed Junioren-Preis winner Soreanga the main players here. The pair met at Mulheim on debut in August with the former registering a 2 1/4-length verdict. Others of note include last season's G3 Preis der Winterkonigin winner Alsterperle, who had earlier run second to Believe In Me in the Listed Winterkonigin-Trial, and the one-for-one maiden winners Antigua and Ginger Cat. [Sean Cronin].

Sunday, Tokyo, Japan, post time: 15:40, YUSHUN HIMBA (JAPANESE OAKS)-G1, ¥323,670,000, 3yo, f, 2400mT

Field: Mitsukane Venera (Jpn) (Maurice {Jpn}), Lay Classic (Jpn) (Kitasan Black {Jpn}), Alankar (Jpn) (Epiphaneia {Jpn}), Long Tall Sally (Jpn) (Kitasan Black {Jpn}), Realize Luminous (Jpn) (Silver State {Jpn}), Longing Celine (Jpn) (Maurice {Jpn}), Stunning Lady (Jpn) (Benbatl {GB}), Smart Priere (Jpn) (Epiphaneia {Jpn}), Trinity (Jpn) (Saturnalia {Jpn}), Star Anise (Jpn) (Drefong), Ametista (Jpn) (Kitasan Black {Jpn}), Dream Core (Jpn) (Kizuna {Jpn}), Enne (Jpn) (Kizuna {Jpn}), Sorpassare (Jpn) (Kizuna {Jpn}), Ange de Joie (Jpn) (Kitasan Black {Jpn}), Juryoku Pierrot (Jpn) (Orfevre {Jpn}), Sweet Happiness (Jpn) (Real Impact {Jpn}), Laughterlines (Jpn) (Al Ain {Jpn}).

TDN Analysis: Star Anise is the established superstar in the line-up following her impressive win in the G1 Oka Sho (Japanese 1,000 Guineas), but the big question here is whether she has the stamina for the markedly longer trip. Both her pedigree and style of racing suggest give cause for concern on that score, whereas chief market rival Laughterlines shaped like a filly who would relish the extra distance when winning the G2 Flora Stakes over 2,000 metres at this course last time. She appeals as perhaps the most likely winner, with the unexposed Juryoku Pierrot also making the shortlist, alongside a couple of also-rans from the Oka Sho. Dream Core finished only ninth there but has the ability to get involved if rediscovering her best form, while Alankar, a daughter of the 2016 Yushun Himba scorer Sinhalite (Deep Impact), should also appreciate going up in trip after her fifth-place finish at Hanshin. [Adam Houghton].

Sunday, Sha Tin, Hong Kong, post time: 16:05, STANDARD CHARTERED CHAMPIONS & CHATER CUP-G1, HK$13,000,000, 3yo/up, 2400mT

Field: Romantic Warrior (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}), Deep Monster (Jpn) (Deep Impact ({Jpn}), Cap Ferrat (Aus) (Snitzel {Aus}), Rousham Park (Jpn) (Harbinger {GB}), Numbers (NZ) (Tivaci {Aus}), Ka Ying Generation (Ire) (Churchill {Ire}), Winning Wing (NZ) (Preferment {NZ}), Gentlemen Legacy (Aus) (Showtime {Aus}), Romantic Thor (Justify).

TDN Analysis: The redoubtable Romantic Warrior has only raced over this 2,400-metre distance on one previous occasion and that was when he was beaten in this race in 2023. His rivals will be looking at that as a potential chink in his armour but, in pure form terms, he's so far ahead of the rest that he should be good enough to get away with it, even if the trip does stretch him to his very limit in his quest to secure Hong Kong's Triple Crown. If there is a horse in the field to deny Romantic Warrior a 15th career Group 1 win, then it could be Japanese raider Deep Monster, who took the notable scalp of Goliath when last seen winning the G2 H.H The Amir Trophy in Qatar. Cap Ferrat finished third in this race 12 months ago and looks a contender for minor honours once again following his runner-up finish in the G1 Champions Mile here last time. [Adam Houghton].
